“For the past two years students in the Sexuality, Marriage and Family Studies Program have been involved in a campus-wide project that explores issues of inclusivity at the University of Waterloo. BeInclusive seeks to promote a campus climate that is inclusive of all under- or misrepresented groups, in particular the LGBTQQ community. The BeInclusive initiative evolved from a class project for SMF 310 – Sexual Ethics, entitled ‘The Eroticization of Lesbians in Society and Mass Media’. Through a combination of literary research and opinions of staff, faculty, and students at UW, the presentation received a large and positive response from classmates and professor, Dr. Tracy Penny Light, who encouraged the group to further pursue their ideas in the form of a documentary. Under the guidance of Dr. Penny Light, Kayla Orr, Alexandra Wendel and Jennifer Wunder were awarded a $12,000 grant from the Arts Endowment Fund to create a documentary film in fall 2008″.
